[edit] Project Description

Deb Lennington, senior financial specialist at Ross School of Business, has developed an application that generates significantly enhanced, easily accessible Source/Use Statements that can provide both consolidated and departmental information.

[edit] Business Need

  • Reduce the time and complexity involved in the process of running Source/Use Statements used to review the overall status of the Ross School’s finances.
  • Generate Source/Use reports on both a School-wide basis and an individual department basis.
  • Generate Source/Use reports for either the fiscal year-to-date or for one period at a time.
  • Reduce the additional analytic effort required to generate the single view presentation of each report.

[edit] System/Application & Data Sources

The Ross School Source/Use Statement application is BusinessObjects-based, and it uses data from the U-M Data Warehouse.

[edit] Project Purpose, Scope, & Deliverables

  • Improve on the University’s Source/Use Report (available through nVision in FINODS.
  • Provide a summary Source/Use statement consolidating all departments.
  • Provide a breakdown by sub-account of the Consolidated Summary’s Source Use Accounts.
  • Generate individual statements for each department:
    • Based on the department IDs where all transactions actually posted.
    • Based on the department IDs where transactions should have posted (the initial department ID for the project grant involved.
  • Produce a statement that compiles financial information into a format commonly used at the Ross School.
  • Create a detailed listing of all transactions that allows for easy filtering.

Deb created two versions of the BusinessObjects-based Source/Use application -- one for use at the overall Ross School level and another for use at the department level. The department level version allows users to designate any number of specific department IDs for simultaneous processing – a feature very useful for associate deans and other managers who manage a number of separate departments.

[edit] Audience/Users
