[edit] Project Description

The Energy Management Web Team has developed a Buildings section on their Web site that provides a Web-based tool that displays both an historic and a current view of information related to utilities consumption and cost for each building on campus.

[edit] Business Need

  • Support the University’s current energy conservation program and outreach campaigns.
  • Enable managers to identify the level of energy and resources used in their building.
  • Help building occupants identify the impact of their cooperation in conserving utilities

[edit] System/Application & Data Sources

The Web application on the Building section of the Utilities and Plant Engineering Web site draws utilities information from the M-Pathways Financials system and from the Utilities tables in the Space Management data set in the U-M Data Warehouse. It presents utilities consumption and cost data in charts for each campus building. The Buildings section of the Web site is updated automatically every month when utilities accounts are processed.

The Web application also links directly to the Utilities and Plant Engineering Energy Management Construction Status database located on the Energy Management drive. This database contains information about all active and completed Energy Conservation Measures (ECMs) including annual estimated reduction of energy consumption and annual estimated energy cost savings produced by implementation of a particular ECM or project.

[edit] Project Purpose, Scope, & Deliverables

  • Provide energy and utility data for each building via a user-friendly interface with a simple and straight-forward organization.
  • Minimize labor and reduce maintenance costs by automating updates of the Web-based information whenever possible.
  • Allow campus building occupants to view their building’s utilities data.
  • Enable comparison of current fiscal year information with information from the prior year.
  • Provide views of the usage and cost of electric, steam, gas, and water utilities.
  • List all ECMs or projects undertaken to make a particular building more energy or utility efficient.
  • Calculate the reduction of emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2), sulfur dioxide (SO2), nitrogen oxides (NOX) achieved by the ECMs and projects.
  • Provide historical information for a building showing annual consumption and expense for each utility commodity over the past four fiscal years.
