Databases for MBA Essentials Participants

This page includes resources for graduates of the Ross School of Business's MBA Essentials Program.
These are focused on entrepreneurial databases that are available to the entire University of Michigan population. These resources are available to program graduates who hold an appointment or are a student of the University of Michigan. Also visit the MBA Essentials blog with news and information for graduates of the program.

Why use this database?
- Fantastic general resource
- Great information on companies, especially private ones
- Good for information from press releases
- Find the Wall Street Journal in full text from 1984 to present
- For older Wall Street Journal and New York Times use Proquest Historical Newspapers (From within the ABI/Inform Global Database, go to select database and choose Proquest Historical Newspapers)
Why use LexisNexis Academic?
- Great general resource for company information
- Use Company Dossier (Business tab under search) for information on public and private companies
- Extensive source for company news
- Find the New York Times in full text from 1980 to the present
Why use this?
- Includes international, domestic, and Michigan-based news-related databases, including hundreds of US and international newspaper titles.
- Great way to research smaller private companies that might have good local news coverage.

- Fantastic resource for company and industry information
- Good information on private companies
- Use to find investment reports, written by analysts at investment firms, that can help identify strengths and weaknesses of a particular company
- Contains company histories and rankings
Marketline Business Information Center
Why use this?
- Source for Datamonitor Country and Industry reports which contain key competitors, news, stock lists, and SWOT reports.
Why use Mergent Online?
- Good resource for public company financials
- Source for the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) filings and annual reports
OneSource Global Business Browser: US and AsiaPac Editions
Why use OneSource?
- Excellent company database for both public and private firms
- Advanced searching lets you find and export company information based on size, industry, location, parent, ownerships, etc.
Why use Orbis?
- Largest company database offered at Kresge
- Includes information about European, US, Canadian, South and Central American, Japanese, Chinese, and African companies, as well as banks and insurance companies.
Standard and Poor's NetAdvantage
Why use NetAdvantage?
- Online access to nine S&P publications covering stocks, bonds, dividends, earnings, industry surveys and additional company information.
Why use Zephyr?
- Information about M&A, IPO, and venture capital deals, going back five years for international deals and back to 1997 for deals involving European and American companies.

Why use this database?
- Strong marketing reports on a variety of topics- especially consumer goods
- Market and economic statistics
- Worth searching but it probably would not replace ABI/Inform Global (Proquest)

- Great for industry research
- Focus on manufacturing and service industries
- Can search by NAICS codes
Why use this?
- International news, economic statistics, market quotes and analyst reports on countries, companies, and industries.
Why use this?
- Great resource for marketing reports on a variety of topics from restaurants to art galleries
- Contains demographic marketing reports
- All reports can be downloaded to PDF

- Excellent resource for exploring green buildings and green energy.
- Includes articles from Environmental Building News (1992 to the present), the GreenSpec building product database, High Performance Buildings Case Studies, and links to selected resources for environmentally sensitive design and construction.

- Excellent country-based market reports on a variety of industries
- Useful for looking at tourism or energy in a specific country or region
- Includes SWOT (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats) analysis for many industries
