This light was the fourth one at Calumet, the three previous ones having been built in 1851, 1873 and 1876.  This light sat on a 7,000-foot-long breakwater stretching out into Lake Michigan's Calumet Harbor south of downtown Chicago, Illinois.  The breakwater is so long that the lighthouse was technically in Indiana.  The lighthouse shown here has been demolished and no longer exists.  It has been replaced by a light on top of a steel cylinder. <br clear=all>

Calumet, Illinois

Built: 1905/1995

The light in the top photo was the fourth one at Calumet (built in 1905), the three previous ones having been built in 1851, 1873 and 1876. This light sat on a 7,000-foot-long breakwater stretching out into Lake Michigan's Calumet Harbor south of downtown Chicago, Illinois. The breakwater is so long that the lighthouse was actually in Indiana. The lighthouse shown here was demolished in 1995 and has been replaced by a fifth light on top of a steel cylinder, shown in the middle photo. The bottom photo shows the current light and the ones on the detached breakwater as well.
