Barnegat Light, New Jersey

Built: 1859

Automated: 1927

Decommissioned: 1944

This distinctive 161-foot tall tower sits at the north end of Long Beach Island guarding the Inlet to the Atlantic Ocean. It is located about 900 feet south of the original lighthouse which had been built in 1835. It was decommissioned in 1944 when it was determined that the offshore Barnegat Lightship was more effective. Today, the tower is part of a State Park and is open to the public.
