Fort Washington Light

Fort Washington National Park, Maryland
Built: 1882
This 28-foot tall, wood frame, pyramidal tower was originally built as a fog bell tower, with a light atop a nearby pole. In 1901 the tower was modified to accommodate a light. Intended only as a temporary measure until another light tower could be built, it is still home to the Fort Washington light signal today. Fort Washington is located on the east bank of the Potomac River about 14 miles south of the Washington D.C., where the river turns due north.
