[edit] Lab Image

  1. 4hi/4hp Upgrades Needed - ASAP!! (4ip=4416, 4ii=4417)

    2. Insert System and default user ARD plists
    3. R needs to be loaded
    4. chmod 777 /Users/Shared
    5. ARD License Preload?
  2. Needs ability to take on system updates between versions
  3. ~/Private/MATHLAB directories need to be "versioned" to keep old stuff from causing problems
  4. 10.5 load needs to be tested -- unknown if OD bind will work. Note: 10.5 will be required for new lab machines!

[edit] Faculty Load: MacOSX

  1. For 10.5+: Dept Load needs to be updated
  2. Faculty should be bound to our OD, so that some management is possible (Startup/shutdown; default printers; inventory?)
  3. Revise Math's login.hook file so that it can be used with faculty machines to allow any faculty to log into any faculty box; it should detect the "owner" of the machine its running on and grant access to the internal disk for that owner.
  4. Upgrade faculty to 10.5 during upgrade cycle
  5. Faculty Upgrades: April/May

[edit] Faculty Load: Linux

  1. Move to RHEL5. Note: There may be issues with libstc++6 support in Mathematica 6
  2. Adopt sudo admin model as in MacOSX
  3. Adopt "self-service" update model as in MacOSX
  4. How does RHEL5 stack up to Xubuntu in delivering Linux to our faculty?

[edit] Staff Loads

  1. Vista migration (SS08)
  2. Printer configuration - any ways to smooth this?
  3. Can office staff use a Mac? a Netbooted image? who should be the trial person?

[edit] Services

  1. Printing - Bonjour detection, zero-config clients on Mac, Linux?
  2. Can Nagios help us monitor OS updates?
  3. Printer Pooling: using 2 4250's/4350's instead of 1 8150 for each queue. Needs cost analysis performed; already have money for 4 lab printers (2007 and 2008 upgrades) to try this out. We would gain a measure of redundancy for floor printers. Note: 4250's can be had for around $900. Toner? Printer Life--do we care in this scenario?
  4. 2009: should we buy ONLY iMac 20's for lab, faculty and staff? (staff would require LSAIT-buyin, as well as Fussman)
  5. Web printing - can it be made to handle Office documents?

  2. State of MathIT - 2008
