Creative Commons provides free legal tools that let authors, scientists, artists, and educators easily mark their creative work with the freedoms they want it to carry. It is related to, and in some cases integrated into, many of the 2.0 tools collected in this wiki, like microformats and Flickr.
Creative Commons works in conjunction with copyright to grant blanket permission for certain kinds of uses of a copyrighted work.
There's a great video that explains the founding principles of Creative Commons on their website. It's called Get Creative.
