[edit] australia archives budget

Here, in short, is the raw material of northern history, and here everyone assumed it would remain: until, that is, the morning of November 13 last year, when National Archives of Australia director-general Ross Gibbs announced that the state offices and reading rooms in Darwin, Hobart and Adelaide would be shut down during the next 2 1/2 years. The reason: budget cutbacks during that period of $3.5 million, a sliver of the NAA's annual $77m funding. Uproar ensued. Fierce argument engulfed the historical profession. Archivists emerged from the shadows, hurling broadsides.
