This Article states that solar cells are at the point to have a big impact on our energy industry, but there aren't enough investors or producers. " At 8% efficiency the entire world could obtain all the electricity it needs from solar cells covering land equivalent to the size of Colorado (~ 100,000 square miles). Some of the most recent, and experimental, PV cells have surpassed 40% efficiency." The technology is there, all that is needed now is for the money. The problems are that Solar farms require a lot of overhead, because land and the cells are expensive, and the cells degrade over time. But it is the most renewable and constant green energy source.
