Allison Wong Biographical Story “Mom, there is a customer who wants an egg-roll,” I say. “Can’t you see I’m busy, charge it if you want to!” mom yells back. I was nine-years old, and never handled a cash register before. Timidly I examined the buttons on the cash register and found the one labeled “egg-roll”; pressing the button the screen flashed “$1.10.” The customer paid with two dollars and I returned ninety cents. My mom was born in Guangzhou, China and my dad was born in Hong Kong. Due to life circumstances, both of them immigrated to Venezuela and there they met, on the other side of the world. Later on they moved to Puerto Rico, where me and my brother where born. Originally my dad went to Puerto Rico with some friends to start a plastic bag factory. After the factory was closed, my dad took over a Chinese restaurant. Every day after school, I will go to the restaurant and spent all day there until closing time to go back home with my parents. Eventually I was able to start helping in the restaurant and ended up being the cashier of the business. Since then, I was the cashier of the restaurant for the next 8 years. Working next to my parents since a very young age and being exposed to the real world made me understood the value of money and the hardship people faced everyday in order to feed their family. Even though my brother and I were born in Puerto Rico, we are “Asian” and a minority in a Latino country. We were the only Asian students of our classes. Usually children get their parents to help them with their homework; this was not the case in my family. My parents’ early migration caused them to abandoned school in order to work; therefore a lack of educational background was present. Additionally, my mom speaks no English and is barely fluent in Spanish. Dad was able to help, but was often too busy working. I was left to be the one who helped my younger brother with his homework. During my High School years, I knew I wanted to study in the States. I understood the importance of extracurricular activities and through different clubs and organizations I found several passions. To my biggest discovery Oratory became one of them. I participated in Spanish Oratory competitions and surprised many people being the only Asian participant and went from 12th place in the first year to 2nd place in my last year of competition. Discovering passions for volunteering and art, made me to start considering my future or at least what I wanted to study in college. I started looking for summer programs opportunities in the United States. I was rejected to the first program I applied. Even though I was really upset I later on learned that some things happen for a reason. I ended up being accepted in an Engineering program at the University of California, Berkeley. Trough the LEAD SEI (Leadership, Education, and Development Summer Engineering Institute) program, I worked with an organization called “Engineers Without Borders” (EWB). My project in the program was to use the simplicity of engineering to create new configurations that will improve a wind turbine already created by EWB for people in Guatemala. The process of development of the configurations made me realized I want to be an engineer who will aid society by solving problems that will improve its quality of life. Before this program I had little idea on what I wanted my major to be. I then re-applied for this program for the next summer and applied to an Engineering program in Puerto Rico for the purpose of comparison. Fortunately after these programs I was able to figure out that I wanted to major in Industrial and Operations Engineering (IOE). Being accepted at the University of Michigan in the College of Engineering was one of the biggest surprises I had in life. I will be pursuing my degree of IOE but meanwhile I will be working on a sustainability project for third world countries. I am currently a member of “Woven Wind” which is part of “Bluelab” at the University of Michigan. The project I am working on is a small scaled wind turbine designed for a village in Guatemala with one of the purpose being that the people in Guatemala will be able to reproduce it with their own products such as their textiles for the blades. As a future engineer, I would like to keep working on different sustainability projects especially designed for third world countries.

The Mathematics of Lego http://www.wired.com/wiredscience/2012/01/the-mathematics-of-lego/ This article talks about a study of comparing LEGO set as a system and its pieces as building blocks. It concludes that the larger a system is, the larger the amount of building blocks are necessary and therefore there is a grow in types of building blocks. This relationship is sub linearly though, as the system grows, fewer types of building blocks will be used and this is compared to how as a city grows, fewer gas stations exist. The point is to use the same pieces efficiently.

Hiring vs. Talent http://techcrunch.com/2012/01/08/talent-not-hiring/ The article talks about how many companies should evaluate talent when hiring new employees. Companies take into account 3 questions when looking at new candidates. The first question, "Would we be willing to do a startup with you?" This means, will the employee be able to get along with everyone, able to communicate efficiently, trustable? The second question, "Can you 'knock the socks off' the company in 90 days?" It will take time for the new employee to get up to speed about current systems and processes, so does the employee asks questions in order to get up to speed, does the employee learn fast. The last questions that needs to be asked is "In four to six years, will you be doing something amazing?" This means will the employee be able to do something amazing now, or in the future with another team. Companies want employees with lots of potential, because it leads to the company and employee becoming more successful.

Aneek Sarker When my lego house came crumbling down, my dad was always there to help me put it back together. “The forces from those pieces causes a shear force which in turn” blah blah blah, my dad, an engineer, was always explaining to me, at the age of 4, how things worked. As a kid I didn’t understand what he was talking about, but I knew my dad knew everything. From a young age I’ve wanted to become an engineer because of my dad and of course legos. I grew up with legos, building anything from cars to skyscrapers. Once Hurricane Katrina hit my city of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, I was in shock. Baton Rouge only lost power for a week, but as the state started to recover, Baton Rouge was becoming huge. Our population doubled overnight and construction was exploding. I was 13, and finally started to wonder what went into making all the new shiny buildings and nice houses. Of course I went to my dad because I thought he knew everything, but surprisingly he wasn’t able to give me a thorough explanation. I wanted to know more about the financial and management processes more than the actual use of materials and machines. Naturally, I went to my computer and googled it. Throughout high school I wanted to start a business up myself, but could never manage the capital. A big reason I chose University of Michigan was because it had a great engineering and great business program. Now that I am finally learning engineering, I’m excited to learn more about entrepreneurship and use my knowledge to create something awesome.

As someone living in China, let me tell you what life is like with restricted internet It is scary that we are headed down the same direction if SOPA is passed, the Stop Online Piracy Act. I don't even think that restricting the internet will help in any way to stop piracy, and people will continue to download illegal content no matter what the government tries to do.

Hacker news: The rise and fall of Netflix http://www.screenjunkies.com/movies/movie-lists/netflix-in-2011-how-to-b... This outlines how Netflix went from putting blockbuster out of business to struggling to compete for its market share. The downfall came from odd business decisions like mistimed price hikes (they were engaging in negotiations with networks) and by splitting into two completely different companies; one that handles online videos (Netflix) and another that does the video by mail (Qwikster). They began to lose subscribers and lose content while raising prices and so they say a sharp fall in stock prices.

The Most Common Way Entrepreneurs Kill Their Business by nick o'neill http://nickoneill.com/the-most-common-way-entrepreneurs-kill-their-busin... This article gives light on the common reasons that entrepreneurs meet with failure early on in their venture. O'Neill talks about how entrepreneurs tend to get ADHD like symptoms and constantly have urges to move on to new ideas. He warns them that by doing so before firmly establishing their current business, they would no only lose out on their first venture, but also they would soon realize that the new business idea needs just as much work or more than the previous one.

Hacker News 1/8/2012 Focus on talent, Not hiring It should be understood that when a company or a business wants to succeed, the team has to have a dynamic and great teamwork. The team is extremely important and the fact that every single member needs to be on the same page. This article shows that if the team is the main priority, the hiring needs to be more focused on talent more than anything else. And the result that can come out of it. Instead of just hiring, the talent in the individual person means a lot. This can result in a better growth in the company and have a better impact rather than just the number in general. This is more beneficial for the team and the individual as well. Results will come faster and the talent can be very reflective on the whole business in general. http://techcrunch.com/2012/01/08/talent-not-hiring/

Bryan Mazor Short Bio Couple high points: Playing soccer against kids in switzerland. Clubbing in Berlin and Madrid. Hiking from rim to rim in the grand canyon. Watching Spain play Germany in the 2010 World Cup in a Munich Bier Garden. Having wine and cheese under Notre Dame at night in Paris. Road trips to Bonaroo, NYC, and Madison, Wisconsin with my brother and friends. Snow shoeing in the swiss alps. A week in London, and a week in Rome. Sleeping in an Igloo. Funny Story: It was summer after freshman year in high school and me, my friend Kyle, and some other guys wanted to launch some model rockets off; despite Smokey the Bear and his "extreme fire danger" declaration. We went to launch them at a state forest near my cabin with a bunch of chest high trees. After launching (and subsequently destroying) our rockets; our thirst was not quenched. We did, however, have some extra engines, so we lit one off. It just shoots off, almost hitting one of my friends, and then disappears away. We look for a bit for it, get distracted, then begin talking for a little while. Then Kyle points and cries "Holy Shit look!!!" There are flames coming up from a little away. Kyle and I run out there and theres a fire burning away the forest with a radius of about 5 feet, and we freak out. We do everything to put it out, peeing on it kicking dirt. I call my dad; "Dad! Dad! We started a forest fire!!" my dad goes "Okay. I'll bring a shovel and we'll pat it out." "NO Dad! It's big! Call the fire department!" Kyle's freaking out pacing "My mom is gonna kill me ... she's gonna kill me ..." I yell "Kyle! we should pull out trees! Get rid of stuff to burn!" We try this for a while, until the smoke becomes too much. My dad comes rolling in, shovel in hand, "Wow! Good thing I called 911..." Eventually an airplane begins to circle the fire, as it had expanded to be around 20 acres of area. Around 6 fire trucks came, and eventually a bull dozer comes and plows a circle around the fire, stopping it. I think the final count was 40 acres; on my old phone I had a picture. The authorities come also, and naturally demand to meet with Kyle and I at Kyle's house. My dad drives us, and is giving us advice as to what to say and not to say. Nothing happens to us, we didn't burn down valuable property and i guess they were glad we actually called it in. We get a talking to, and a warning about riding 2 people to an ATV, and thats it. Neighbors weren't too happy though.

Study finds piracy withering against legal alternatives http://www.theregister.co.uk/2012/01/04/study_piracy_legal_alternative/ This article is about how people would rather use a legal alternative if one is available at the correct price. This is particularly interesting in light of SOPA which gives unheard of powers to copy-right holders in order to stop online privacy. This study and the experiment done by Louie CK (google it, but basically people bought his video for $5 even though they could give it to their friend for free after paying for it and he made over $1,000,000 in 12 days). This article suggests that legislators do not understand the public feelings toward piracy and copy-right and perhaps media conglomerates do not need SOPA, but rather need to change their business model in order to stop SOPA.

Duck Programming http://unspace.ca/blog/duck-programming/ Configuring a software system without actually using programming tools of languages. It programs the system by design. It is called 'duck' programming based on the saying “If it walks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, it’s a duck.” It only uses established database systems by updating rules instead of code. However, any mistakes run into are put upon the user, because the program "works according to design". There are no safeguards or recoveries from disaster. More responsibility is put in the hands of the user, with the freedom to make changes or update systems without going in and reprogramming, or spend money on expensive programmers and utilities. Cricket Growing up with cricket as THE sport in a country with cricket frenzy overtook religious holidays, it was the one sport I used to play. There was no time for anything else between school and tutors. india is not big on sports otherwise. So when I found myself on the softball and volleyball team, 5 years after leaving the country, I was pleasantly surprised. It took me a long time to understand them, but somehow, it happened. I lived in my home country, speaking 4 languages with family from different parts of the country. After 12 years of getting used to the educational system, my father announced a move to Zurich, Switzerland. Eighth grade was a blur of cultural shock and easy classes. Ninth grade, I finally adapted. Tenth grade, I moved to Singapore. This time, I was ready. I told myself I could take literally anything thrown at me, after the harrowing experience of going from a sheltered Asian life to an open-cultured, European one. I found myself in Singapore, and allowed myself to try and fail at sports, and then try again. I discovered my passion for scuba diving and hiking, and found time to indulge in reading like I always did. I found friendship in the most unlikely people and I stuck to them, for once. Today, I'm a world away from all my homes (I have never believed in just having one), and I keep finding more things I want to include in my life. I came to Michigan because my counsellor told me to apply, but after it helped me become a developed writer, and realize I really wanted to do Informatics; no regrets. Looking back, the only way I could have absorbed everything was because I questioned everything. I never took anything as given and opportunity, to me, is on top of all the hills I previously refused to climb. The only thing I can say I know for certain is that 19 years, 7 languages and 3 whole sports (!) later, I still have so many things to find and indulge in.

Raising venture capital or bootstrapping your startup? http://techcrunch.com/2012/01/07/why-bootstrapping-over-rated/ This article addresses the quintessential question for entrepreneurs: should you bootstrap or raise venture capital? Bootstrapping allows you to retain complete ownership and freedom over the startup, which is certainly a big advantage, but it also puts the company in a "perpetual state of fund-seeking, which is far more distracting than being in fundraising mode." Raising venture capital, however, allows you to achieve or continue growth in a process of "giving equity to grow equity." While the founders may find their share of the startup diluted by investors - perhaps the most common objection to raising venture capital - VC investments also provide the startup with a valuable source of business acumen: the board of directors. The author, the bootstrapping founder of WatchMojo.com, astutely argues that ultimately, you can own 100% of a lemonade stand or 1% of Coca-Cola. Your choice.

Throughout all the technological, programming and coding articles on the Hacker News site, one article stood out to me in particular: "How to nap." http://www.boston.com/bostonglobe/ideas/naps/
I was surprised to learn that a simple sixty minute nap could "improve alertness for up to 10 hours," (useful for studying for exams!!!!) Creativity, sensory processing, motor skills, and overall health can be improved with proper REM sleep. I also appreciated their helpful tips for a perfect nap!!

China Builds a 30 story Hotel in 15 Days In this article I was astonished to find how fast China built this 30-story hotel. This hotel is 9M earthquake resistant, 5x more energy efficient, and generates 20x purer air. Attached to this article is also a video showing how fast it was built. The hotel was build around the crane, and the crane stayed in the center of the building after the project was finished. I do not know what the function of the crane is in the middle of the hotel though. Now all we need to get is the US to build this fast! Imagine how much more industrialized the US will become if it builds buildings this fast. http://singularityhub.com/2012/01/11/china-builds-30-story-hotel-in-just...

Jonathan Fine Biographical Story An entrepreneur is someone who goes beyond the textbook definition of “businessman.” He or she has the discipline and drive to turn dreams into reality. Deciding on which dream to follow is a challenge within itself. From a very young age I've always kept in depth records of ideas. Time and time again, I would read somewhere that someone else had followed through with a variant of my idea. I've learned that there is no better time to get off the sidelines than college. As we grow older our lives will become further complex and filled with responsibility. Time will become even more scarce. This is the perfect time to pursue an idea. It doesn't matter if it fails, for the experience is invaluable and will put way ahead of your peers. I'm using this thinking to develop a stronger sense of urgency to just do it (whatever it is).

I've been immersed in the entrepreneurial pillars of hustle and drive form a very young age. My Grandfather came to this country with not a scratch of English or a dime in his pocket, and despite every conceivable obstacle, built a life for his family through a string of business ventures. I watched my Mom build a hugely successful business from the ground up while single handedly playing the role of Mother and Father for her children. I can go on with more stories, but the motif of building something from nothing has become ingrained in me. In turn I've become motivated by fears of ending up in the rat race; falling victim to circumstance; and losing control of my destiny. Success for me will be measured by the contribution and change I make on society. I want money to be a result of my success not a reason for it.
I think this class is going to be a great experience that will leave us with practical lessons that go far beyond the classroom. I'm excited to surround myself with like minded entrepreneurial people and build a strong team.

The Greatest Running Shoe Never Sold Lenn Hann created a new running shoe that didn't use ethylene-vinyl acetate, or EVA, which adds weight to the shoe. Instead he used carbon fiber that did not add as much weight to the shoe and "consumed an average of 2.2 percent less oxygen"; this made a huge difference when running long distances. Hann was in negotiation with Under Armor and he ended up rejecting their last offer, after working with Hann in the lab to help develop his shoe. I feel like Under Armor kind of stole Hann's idea; Under Armor still saw the makings of Hann's shoe. After Hann rejected their offer (hoping for a better offer), Under Armor decided to not with with Hann anymore. Not that much later, Under Armor launched their new Charge RC running shoe. Under Armor said that they ended up using a different form of carbon fiber. Hann was screwed out of money that he deserved. http://www.businessweek.com/magazine/the-greatest-running-shoe-never-sol...

Military Technology takes out taking cover The U.S. military has created "smart ammunition" designed to stop enemies from being able to flee behind heavy cover such as large rocks or thick walls. A bullet has been created which after being fired will explode when it is in the vicinity of the enemy targeted. Few of these "smart" weapons have been created but have been used effectively resulting in the capturing of more military enemies and fewer U.S. military deaths.

QR codes have been around for almost ten years now but still haven't reached their peak in use and I originally though it was a useless innovation but I may be wrong. I never realized the potential of these barcodes and how much information they can really pack in those small squares. Once Google decided to make a QR code that links to the login page, I realized that they could be useful tools to guide users through the constantly rising flood of information. Because QR codes can be scanned very quickly from any mobile device with a camera, they can be used to steer possible customers to your product or service and connect people to information that you want them to see. I think we may begin to see QR codes used in new ways and they could be an important tool in the future.

If we attempt to find ways to only remove the algae we will not be able to stop the problem. I think we need to figure out the cause of the algal blooms first, then we will be able to figure out how to stop it from reoccurring once we remove what already sits. Then once we understand the cause we may be able to artificially create the algae in safe conditions to be used for its positive resources.

The word passion has become kind of overused and cliched when applied to entrepreneurship. Many successful entrepreneurs have echoed Cuban's thoughts about being "obsessed" with your vision. This reminds me of when I attended last year's CFE trip to New York and heard a biomedical entrepreneur tell us that "you have to want it so bad that you can't see straight." Another good point Mark Cuban makes is the importance of tangible monetization. Anyone can think of a great idea, few can build a real business around it.

This post has nailed the problem with SOPA protests right on the head: what we witnessed yesterday was the biggest form of slaktivism the world has ever seen. I have been complaining to my friends about SOPA since November and they just thought I was a crazy tech kid who was just complaining, until the past couple of days. Then all of sudden they are asking me about SOPA and they are 'protesting' it by changing their Facebook status or picture...well guess what this article nails it, changing your Facebook picture or sharing a status update does absolutely NOTHING!! The number of people who called their representatives are still in the minority. I have not even seen students at this very "liberal," "politically active" campus do anything about this legislation. We need SOPA to pass then maybe we will get off our lazy butts and do something of value to protest the direction the government is headed: namely taking away the rights of US citizens.

Even Woz Thinks the Android Bests the iPhone http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2012/01/14/even-woz-thinks-the-and... Wozniak, one of Apples co-founders believes the android platform is better than the iPhone. I disagree with his arguments after using the droid platform for over a year with lots of rooting experimenting ("jailbreak" for androids) and until recently I switched to the Iphone 4s. His main argument is that the voice recognition software for the android is more reliable than the iphones "siri". However, I have never used a lot of voice recognition software for either of my phones so I cant give my full opinion here. But, he does state that android has gps capability, tethering, etc: things the iphone CAN'T do. The iPhone actually has everything the android can do even easier. The iPhone doesn't have a solid gps application, but there are many 3rd party apps that you can either download for free or for a cost (quality of app depends on your money spent, but free apps work just as well). The only small argument for Woz is that tethering is a little harder for the iphone (especially the 4s) since free tethering is only if your phone is jailbroken and only up to the 4 has been jailbroken. However, for the android, in order for you to get free tethering as well is if you "root" your droid visa versa. I think the positives and negatives balance out for each phone and it all comes down to appearance and ease of use (which the iPhone has both of). Overall, I am much more satisfied with my iPhone as it is a more stable good all the time phone and don't forget it looks sleek and sophisticated.

Methods of Harvesting of Algae http://www.oilgae.com/algae/har/flo/flo.html Flotation Usually flotation is used in combination with flocculation for Algae Harvesting in waste water. It is a simple method by which algae can be made to float on the surface of the medium and removed as scum. Continuous-flow centrifugation with the classical Foerst rotor is widely used method. This method is reasonably efficient, but sensitive algal cells may be damaged by pelleting against the rotor wall and the method is essentially unselective ; all particles with a sedimentation rate above some limiting value will be collected. http://www.oilgae.com/- website/ blog dedicated to discovering methods and ideas about algae harvesting

Recently Google had announced some changes for the users where all their information will be collected into one piece. Some think that this is an Evil Plan of Google by violating the privacy of the user. O'Reilly debates that just because Google is collecting data from users, it doesn't mean Google is now Evil. He makes a comparison with Apple, where their manufacturing conditions are inhumane. O'Reilly is not trying to defend Google or trash Apple but he is trying to say that Google is not necessarily evil... yet. One of the comments that caught my attention is that Apple never said they are not evil. True. It will take some time in the future to see how Google keeps handling its users information and how do they still keep their "Do No Evil" motto especially now in the internet world where no privacy is available. Another article http://remarkedly.com/2012/01/29/the-real-problem-with-facebooks-timeline/ talks how TIMELINE is a real problem for Facebook users because there is absolutely no privacy. Anyone can easily find now posts that were from three years ago. For many people, this Facebook Timeline is not allowing many people to move on with their lives with past events right in one click access for anyone in the world. So I guess the future debate would hold on how much privacy are the users losing on the internet. Will Google turn to be a Do Evil company. Will Apple keep going with their inhumane conditions.

However, everyone changes and it would be unfair to be judged upon what you were rather than how you have chosen to define yourself presently. Cultural viewfinder I talked to a couple of students and well this is what I got. I. Jewish student Q. Based on your cultural/religious background, What food are holy and alcohol viewed? A. Well I don't keep Kosher. Q. Why? A. My parents never cared, so I don't follow the Jewish laws. Q. Then what things hold a particular cultural value to you then? A. The Jewish star and most importantly the Matza Ball Soup. [Even though the laws were not enforced in his family there are certain aspects that keeps the cultural value such as Food] II. Chinese Exchange student Q. How often do people bath from where you come from? A. Depends, some people don't have water for some time, so a bath is a privilege. For larger cities it is like anywhere, mostly everyday except on cold days. Q. What about dental hygiene? A. That is quite different. It is fine with just brushing your teeth twice, floss is uncommon. Q. Are perfumes used? A. Yes, but on special occasion. [Hygiene depends on the availability] III. American student Q. How often do people bath? A. Good week - everyday Bad week - every other day Q. What is your view of cleanliness? A. Looking good. Q. View of soap? A. Smelling good. Q. Does the way people handle garbage affects politics and tourism? A. Garbage are put in landfills and it depends if people tour landfills. IV. Latin American student Q. How are tourism viewed> A. Tourism can be viewed as a manner of determining social status, education, and mere recreation. It is welcomed as a formed of demonstrating country pride, increasing wealth through commerce, etc. It would be avoided... if the people of a country dislike a particular kind of tourists or perhaps because of an odd sense of isolation. It might be feared... as it might bring a bad reputation on a country or the ideas or people brought are unwelcomed. Q. Are these man made or natural? A. Natural.

Cultural viewfinder: Vishruta Kulkarni (Because I'm international I thought it would be interesting to talk to someone from America. The subject is Foreign Impact.) Work is outsourced and in-sourced. Outsource jobs to pay less taxes through companies, mostly manufacturing for more profit. Bad for economy because we lose jobs. In-sourced in a sense with presence of illegal immigrants working for less than minimum wage. However, they don't pay taxes, no money for government and no jobs for citizens. Most goods are not produced domestically, and are imported from abroad. Depends, because free trade agreement (eg with korea) those are going ot be cheaper because economy is geared towards making those. Tariff makes imported goods more expensive, thus encouraging domestic goods. Can make domestic companies lose market share depending on existence of tariff. People come here to work from other countries, mostly for revenue and security. These workers require minimum qualifications, menial labour jobs are normally taken by them. Higher order jobs may create competition for the position locally, and thus may require higher qualifications.

Cultural Viewfinder Subject: Family Life Family value seems to be equally important culturally. My interviewee stated God being part of family also. Siblings, parents, and also grandparents live together in his house. Parent's are the head of the household and in his family particularly, men and women are are equally important within the family structure. Families participate together for religious and cultural activities. Children born outside of a marriage are not accepted by society. Family structure in the US is very diverse. What interests me is how children born outside of a marriage are not accepted by society. There are many opinions regarding this topic in the US which varies from family to family. Having a relative, who was born outside of marriage, this question made me think of how my society's and my family's view of this individual would change if my culture was different. HN- Everything you thought you knew about learning is wrong http://www.wired.com/geekdad/2012/01/everything-about-learning/ This article is about the myths that we hold about learning and the ways that we should actually approach learning. The ideas that i found very interesting was that instead of working on one skill and perfecting it, and then moving on to another skill; the author suggests that we work on a variety of skills( that are related-for example tennis backhand, forehand, serve etc). then we learn more by learning each skill in relation to another. The author also goes on to talk about how we should study our material, and then leave it until the materials barely retrievable in our memory. then according to the author we would remember a lot more the second time we study.

Through the eyes of an Ethiopian On the topic of poverty: On asking him the question "Is poverty prevalent?", he replies with an immediate yes, he didn't even take a second to think about that he was answering; it felt as if the word "poverty" triggered an immediate resistive and defensive reaction in the tone of his voice. It was rather eye opening because it told me that even though the citizens of the country knew that they were poor, and accepted it, they stood proud and rather defensive about with the "we're happy the way we are" feel to it. I then asked him "How many people live a life of poverty?". To this he said that he didn't know but told me that there were several million that were below the poverty line and the government hadn't taken much effort to even get a proper census. The moment I brought the government into the picture, he grew irritated. He seemed to feel that the government just wasn't up for the job of taking care of such a culturally rich country. He said that the government and its policies to allow MNCs to exploit workers would erode the sanctity and pristine nature of their cultural heritage. And when I asked him about how people escaped poverty, he told me by hardwork and commitment. He told me that his family had only made it to the US because of his father and uncle, who worked tirelessly to earn money for a ticket to this country when he was 4. He said that opportunities are very slim back home and that whenever people got the chance to make money, they would; it was all the hope they had to a better future. He also commented on the wealthy Ethopians by saying that they too were not playing their part in communal welfare. They rich interacted with the poor in a hierarchal and condescending manner- they were treated either as domestic workers or servile members of society that would obey the orders of the rich to earn the extra dollar. Overall, on the note of poverty, a rather sensitive topic, my Ethiopian friend exposed to the views of poverty from a citizen of such an culturally rich but impoverished nation. Through the words and examples he used it was clear that rich or poor, they stood by their heritage and values as a way out of poverty.

Everything You Thought You Knew About Learning Is Wrong http://www.wired.com/geekdad/2012/01/everything-about-learning/ This article talks about the inefficiencies of the way the we currently learn. While the article may be "merely summarizing a greater body of research", I think that it has a few good points worth reading about. For example, the article suggests that we interleave certain skills by practicing a variety of similar skills, and that way we will retain more information for a longer period of time.

Gender roles in the Moroccan culture Being Moroccan myself, I thought it would be useless to ask an american all these questions about gender role since you already know the answers. Thus, I decided to let you learn more about my culture. I carefully chose one of my closest friends who still live in Morocco and asked him some questions about gender roles in society. What are the social roles of women? It is commonly believed that muslim cultures force the women to stay at home and take care of the households. It is partially true in Morocco, the women will stay at home, take care of the children, waiting for ahusband if she does not have one yet. However, the modernization and the influence of the western culture lead the society to a new familial model. Women look for jobs, they work and some of them prefer to stay single. Do man and women socialize together? It is a very sensible point in Morocco. It is actually taboo to see a man and a women even holding hands in the streets. It may be shocking but that is the truth ! People usually socialize indoors, never in the public space except in very modern places like the cinema or the malls. What happens when a person acts in a role unexpected of his or her gender? There is no such things as tolerance in Morocco. Maybe within the upperclasses, homosexuality or other taboos may be understood due to the influence of the western culture, but it is commonly not accepted in society to see a man or a women acting differently. These people will be discriminated against (family, jobs, friends), in some extrem and rare cases physically harmed.

cultural viewfinder My interviewee is Korean. He moved from Korea to the US in high school. He stated that family culture and family values are very important in his household. He also stated the importance of the wife being a “home-maker” in his culture. He too eventually wants his wife to be a home-maker. He isn’t very interested in dating the way it is done in the west, but instead he has a long-term plan of getting a job, and then getting married. He is also very enthusiastic about his mom’s Korean cooking. In particular he loves “Duck booki- which he described as Rice cakes mixed with spice. He also mentioned that Koreans tend to be careful about their weight, and they try to stay away from fried foods, and he also mentioned that Koreans are known for a lot of plastic surgery. Next, he talked about the police and society. He described the younger adults to be very influenced by the media, and hence they care a lot about fashion and status. Additionally, he described the police to be very lazy and nonchalant about beatings and petty thefts. I found it very interesting that he had a set plan for his life, and was confident about going about it in the US, a completely different culture from the one he grew up in.

Cultural Viewfinder I interviewed a friend of mine named Sarah Abou-Hamdan; She is a Lebanese student here at the University. She was born in Detroit, then moved to Lebanon and lived there pretty much straight through until about 4 years ago, when she moved back stateside. She had some very interesting things to say about Lebanon; boiling down to paint a picture of a place caught between two warring cultures. One being the American, Western culture and the other being the Islamic, Middle Eastern culture. They have become very americanized. Sarah told me that her friends always want Abercrombie or Victoria's Secret clothes as gifts when she goes back home. The women there do not dress with the full length covering burka's but rather like americans (and when it is very hot, they dress with even less clothes). Her friends are also more up to date with American TV than Sarah was. The place is very modern, and very up to date with technology. There is still a strong foce of Islamic culture with Lebanon, however. There is not much class mobility; you have to know somebody to get a job or to make it in the world. It is even worse than the Ivy League. The police will only act when pressured by a powerful friend. Companies only hire when pressured by a powerful friend. Teenagers do not work, because it makes the family look poor. There are not PDA's among non married couples; in fact young women often do not tell their parents of their teenage relationships because relationships are taked very very seriously. The american-ish midset offers a bit of a cultural gettaway for middle eastern people. Lebanon has the most temperate climate compared to the rest of the middle east, and so a lot of people travel there. they travel not only for the weather, but also as a cultural retreat; they can wear less islamic clothing and enjoy a little more freedom. This, however, keeps Lebanon from being completely americanized, as the constant fundamentalist tourism influence is strong. This lack of identity stems from a lack of national pride. Sarah's Lebanese friends on facebook all list their homes as American cities. Nobody has a Lebanese passport, because in the case of a war they will not be allowed to leave the country. The citizens do not like the ineffective police and government, corrupt with VIP influence. So they are all "fair weather fans," living in Lebanon with one foot out of the door.

Confiscating your ice cream cones Yup! Confiscating your ice cream cones . Below there is a link of a video. Just less than 4 minutes and it is quite funny. http://www.jwz.org/blog/2012/02/confiscating-your-ice-cream-cones/ This video is parody of a real story about a woman trying to open and coffee shop where there rules are basically absurd and she will have to pay the rent while the Planning Department process her application and charge her hundreds and thousands of fees when this business might not even be allowed to open. In order for her to serve ice cream, the owner must serve it on a cup, if she uses cones, they will be confiscated. If she uses a toaster for her bagels, the toaster will be confiscated. These kinds of rules make so much trouble for many start up companies that simply discourage people. The future holds many opportunities for entrepreneurs but with these kinds of rules, how do people play the game?

Programming is fun... but really not for everyone http://rdegges.com/how-i-learned-to-program SO after reading this article... i immediately knew that the author was way to intrigued by the idea of promgramming. he goes on and on about the goods of programming. the creativity behind it, the freedom, the sensation you get when you are completed with the project and so on... however, he does not mention that although it can be rewarding, it sure is not for people without the patience of programming. of course programming can be considered a little game when it comes to debugging and playing around with codes, however, for people who want IMMEDIATE results and tangible products.... programming is definitely not for them. ALso, the strenuous exercise of going through line by line and fixing tedious details can be stressful for an individual. so lets keep in mind, that although programming is POWERFUL and definitely useful, it is not for everyone but i suppose dabbling your feet in the water cant hurt a person. but definitely, if there is talent and love for the skill, one should pursue the area.

Unemployment- Cultural Viewfinder I was talking to someone in the airplane while on my way back from the wedding back in Atlanta, GA. And an interesting topic of unemployment came out. This is a huge deal for me cause I cannot find a job as of now and I am going to be graduating this april. It does get me nervous if i do not have a job and a plan after i graduate. However, talking to this fairly old man who seems to be traveling for business was advising me about how jobs should be coming to people naturally. he also said that the reason behind the unemployment is because the companies these days are being more picky than they should be while selecting valid candidates. Job openings are EVERYWHERE, its just the corporate fit that the companies rely on too much for the actualy hiring can go on. he said wait... and things will change. All of this is supposed to come out naturally and it really did reassure me.

While he has lived in the US for the past 20 years, he is has still spent most of his life in the Canary Islands and speaks to his family who still lives in Spain. Q: Do people pray? When and how often do they pray? And what do people pray about? A: “Yes, everyone one prays at sometime or another. It’s a very religious culture, especially when it comes to the elderly. My mother and aunts pray every night before they go to sleep. When I was younger my eldest sister would have us pray before every school test for us to get the best outcome.” Q: What sacrifices are made for religion? A: “Every Sunday morning your time is sacrificed. We would walk 2 miles every Sunday to go to church for a few hours and then ate after with the entire family.” Q: Do people perform Pilgrimages? A: “My mother and aunts would bi-annually make a pilgrimage to the St of Candelaria, which was a walk to the other side of the island to come beg for forgiveness for the sins you had committed those last two years.” Q: Do people perform rituals such as traditional dances or ceremonies? A: “Every week is a different ‘Town Party.’ Depending on which Saint was born that week, one of the towns on the island would throw a carnival like party in the town plaza.”

Raising $100 I talked to the fundraising chairs for my water polo team about using the Pizza House and other Ann Arbor restaurants to donate percentages of their orders on a given night to our organization. Pizza House only offers a program where 15% of the profits of an ordered meal goes to the organization which really won't make much of a dent in our $16,000 goal. But supposedly other restaurants such as Chipotle are willing to offer 50% of the profit for each meal sold. It really just depends on what restaurant we are looking at and it's important that we find the restaurants with the best deals.

The job was easy to come by; an email was sent out to physics majors and I just filled out a form with my physics course grades, and I had a job. Why SOME smart people give bad advice? http://www.rajeshsetty.com/2012/02/21/why-some-smart-people-give-bad-adv... This article reflects on why some successful entrepreneurs who are very passionate and intelligent, tend to give bad advice to budding entrepreneurs. The 8 points listed are: 1. some experts use the chance to give others info, as a means of spreading their business and making money. For example they could scare the listeners into buying their book or joining their program. 2. They make generalizations from their own life, and expect it to work for everyone. 3. Selling Clothes to Thrift Shops During my time home for spring break, I got a little inspiration when looking at all of the clothes that I no longer wear. I went down to the thrift shops on Haight Street in San Francisco where they happily bought my clothes in order to resell in their store. It's a great way to make some money and help out the community. After going to a few thrift stores, I managed to make a little over $100!
