Here are Bruce's notes on what people suggested at the 2009 selection meeting:

Contents

[edit] Boon

  • Good-bye Chunky Rice, Craig Thompson: About two characters saying

goodbye. People seemed to have a lot to say on the subject and the comparison with Blankets.

  • Breakfast After Noon, Andi Watson, Jamie Rich. Factory layoffs put

stress on a young British couple.

  • Usagi Yojimbo, Jim suggests book 16 or 17? rabbits as samurai
  • Same Difference and other stories, Derek Kirk Kim.
  • Mother, Come Home, Paul Hornschmeier. (Note: interviewed by David at

the book fest last year).

  • The Surrogates, a world in which robots are used as surrogates, for

everything.

[edit] David

  • Also brought The Arrival. The story of the immigrant experience, with

fantastic elements.

  • Town of Evening Calm Country of Cherry Blossoms, Fumiyo Kouno. Two short

stories, both two do with the effects of the dropping of the bomb on Japan after WWII.

  • The Portable Frank, Woodring. Surreal, wordless.
  • Bookhunter, Jason Shiga. 70's hardboiled detective story set in the Oakland

county public library system.

  • The Nightly News, by Jonathan Hickman. By a graphic designer;

visually fascinating. Angry. A terrorist plot on the news agencies?

  • Tamara Drewe, Posy Simmonds.

[edit] Alan

  • Kabuki (the 1st): Raised as an assassin since an early age, Kabuki tries

to escape the shadowy Japanese organization. Note style changes (possibly becomes more interesting later, with more painting, collage?) over series.

  • Daisy Kutter, Kutter: (2 small volumes?) Robot western.
  • Journey, William Messner-Loebs: local historical fiction.

[edit] Jim

  • It's a good life if you don't weaken, Seth. Semiautobiographical fiction.

Wistful, moody, beautiful; Jim reads it about once a year.

  • Skyscrapers of the Midwest, Josh Carter:

by author of "Fun home".

  • Omega the Unknown, Jonathan Lethem.
  • The Amazing Remarkable Monsieur Leotard, Eddie Campbell
  • Alec: The Years have Pants. (Note: coming out in July.)

[edit] Eric

lists: "in the vein of blankets and fun home", reflection on self and home.

  • Incognegro, Johnson, Pleece: Jim heard a fascinating interview, a friend

of his thought it was very interesting but not entirely succesful.

  • Graphic Witness: Four Wordless Graphic Novels: anthology of four. To be read

with The Arrival, Shaun Tan. Dave also brought the arrival, says "excellent".

story in graphic form is like, and was extremely impressed with first story. To pair with: A Contract with God (also including short stories, or The Plot', or The Spirit.

[edit] Bruce

  • The Rabbi's Cat, Sfar: most of us have already read it. Jim recommends

his Little Vampire (or was it Vampire Loves?).
