Manitou Island, Michigan

Built: 1861

This 60-foot tall iron skeleton tower replaced the first 1850 lighthouse that was built on the island, which lies about two and a half miles off the tip of Michigan's Keweenaw Peninsula in Lake Superior. The current tower has a cylinder enclosing the spiral stairway. It, and the one at Whitefish Point are the oldest skeletal lights on the Great Lakes and both are early examples of this type of tower built in the United States. This light, now automated, is still active.
