Peggy's Cove, Nova Scotia
Built: 1915
Automated: 1958
This 15 meters (49 feet) tall octagonal concrete tower sits on the east side of the entrance to St. Margaret's Bay on the point's bare massive granite rock. It replaced the original lighthouse on the point which had been built in 1868. Peggy's Cove is one of the most popular tourist spots in Nova Scotia and the lighthouse is one of the most photographed in Canada. Visitors are able to mail their post cards at the Post Office inside the lower level of the lighthouse. This site gained international attention in 1998, in the aftermath of the tragic crash of Swissair Flight 111 only a few kilometers offshore.
