Penfield Reef Light
From lighthouses
Fairfield, Connecticut
Built: 1874
Automated: 1971
This 35-foot tall structure is a square dwelling whose first floor is brick faced and second floor wood framed, with a square tower rising from the second deck. In 1969 the Coast Guard announced plans to replace the lighthouse with a skeletal tower and demolish the structure, but public outcry convinced them to reconsider and the automated light still stands.
