Sand Island Light (AL)

This 132-foot tall brick conical tower stands alone on the small stone island which is just a little larger than the base of the tower itself. Once over 400 acres in size, the island has eroded away and consists only of the stone and rip rap holding it together which has been hauled in over the years to save the tower. Two other lights on the island had fallen victim to the elements and then (Civil) war time bombardments. The light sits off the coast three miles south of Mobile Point and the entrance to Mobile Bay.
