Spectacle Reef Light

Built: 1874
This light, built with limestone brought from Marblehead, Ohio, is located in Lake Huron several miles offshore about 11 miles east of the Straits of Mackinac. Because of its remote location, it took four years to build. At the time, it was the most expensive lighthouse built on the Great Lakes. Its conical tower stands 95 feet tall and its light-tan color makes it unique among the other lights in the area. This light was the featured Lake Huron lighthouse on the Great Lakes Lighthouse series of U.S. Postage stamps issued in 1995.
