Gary Breakwater Light

Built: 1911
This 30 foot tall, steel plated structure sits at the end of an L shaped breakwater, which extends several thousand feet out into the lake to provide protection for Gary Harbor, an artificial harbor constructed to allow the offloading of iron ore brought in from mines in Minnesota. It is located along the southern shore of Lake Michigan, some 26 miles from Chicago. It originally housed a 6th order Fresnel lens, but is topped by a modern beacon today. Blocked from land by the huge US Steel complex, it can only been seen by boat or plane.
