This light is located at the southern tip of the island of Öland. The tower was built by prisoners in 1785 and was first lit by open wood and coal fires. The top and lantern room were added in 1871. At 41 m (134 ft) it is Sweden's tallest lighthouse. Electricity was installed at the light in 1948. It is situated within a nature preserve and the Ottenby Fagel Station (Bird Sanctuary).
