Leards Front Range Light in 2009 - 50th trip

Victoria, Prince Edward Island

Built: 1879

The front range light (top photo) is a 10.5 meter (35 foot) square pyramidal wood tower with flared gallery and square lantern. The tower is painted white with red trim and a red vertical stripe on the seaward side. At one time the tower also carried a triangular board with a red vertical daymark on the Palmer range line, and the tower was the Palmer Rear Range Light. That board is no longer on the tower, so its use as the Parlmer light is questionable.

The rear range light (bottom photo) is a 14 meter (45 foot) square pyramidal wood tower with lantern and gallery, painted white with a red vertical stripe on the seaward side. It is located about 800 meters (1/2 mile) northwest of the front range light on private property surrounded by farm land.

These lights sit on the south shore of PEI marking the way into Victoria Harbour from the Northumberland Strait.
