The term artificial intelligence refers either to an artifact that evinces intelligence, or, more commonly, to the academic discipline whose ultimate aim is the construction of such artifacts. The major topics in artificial intelligence (the discipline) are:

- vision
- automated reasoning
- machine learning
- natural language processing
