Lessons from 2009-2010

  1. Planning and managing expectations (software development and events, student research projects)

Publishing

  • 30% M1/M2 resources published

  • A few Dental submissions accepted to MedEd Portal
  • Open.Michigan video project content published (volunteer project, not managed by Open.Michigan staff)
  • Creation of Best Practices document (Fair Use in OCW)


Engagement

  • Conferences attended: Free Culture, Connexions
  • Papers: ACM, OCWC, ACMC
  • Reading Group
    • Based initially on internal interest to stay abreast of field (internal sharing things with each other)
    • Became showcase for Open.Michigan when made public (didn’t serve its initial purpose)
    • Should re-evaluate: unsuccessful in accomplishing initial goals
  • Developed a more proactive model for OER creation, consulting and training

  • Not yet into the U-M institutional infrastructure (eg. library transition would address this)

  • People who don’t understand our mission and benefits to them,
    • In Med School: not actively advocating against us
    • Open access advocate for one aspect of Open but not for other aspects of Open
  • People who think that monetizing their materials is to the exclusion of openly licensing their content
  • Overuse of Source Unknown/PD-Inel
  • Copyright infringement lawsuit
  • Understanding the lifecycle of the materials we create and house
  • Use of published materials (internal and external)


Open.Michigan Staff Roles

  • Focus on maintaining boundaries of discrete job responsibilities and roles.
    • Past emphasis has capitalized on staff interests and skills


  • Specific positions: currently our African Health Network OER project manager maintains a pulse on all international projects until further development; new Open Education Coordinator works closely with the Publications Manager and takes on point responsibility but other staff are encouraged to attend meetings and provide input.
  • Continue to hand off copyright questions to the Copyright Office.
  • Known Issues
    • dScribe staffing in Fall 2010
    • Maintain clear line of internal communication and roles


Follow Up from Session One

  • Over the next month do a self-assessment of things that you feel are not worthwhile.
  • Everyone develop "activity pie" of how much % time we spend on various activities.
