[edit] Lessons from 2009-2010
- Planning and managing expectations (software development and events, student research projects)
- Consistent engagement and training structure (dScribe)
- Clarity of Open.Michigan's scope and mission, translating this to our constituents
- Connecting across campus to appropriate units of expertise
- Video production and editing is tough
- Lecture Capture: capture, production, distribution
- Don’t accept responsibility of a project over which you have no authority
- Tread carefully with regard to external collaborations (maintain scope and chain of command/role of responsibility)
- Learn to say no!
- Understand our community
- Don’t make promises we can’t keep
- Need to leverage and cultivate a variety of champions (especially faculty)
- Don't overly rely on our existing champions
- Keep perspective and stay practically focused: satisfice
- Be explicit on internal communications when needing input (specifically ask individuals for input or send out information as general FYI without expecting active feedback)
- Use SMART tactics

[edit] SWOT
Strengths (Internal)
- Optimistic
- Multi-talented
- Motivated
- Passionate
- Staffing is fully operational
- Institutional support
- Taking advantage of existing infrastructure (partnerships; social and technical)
- Awareness of O.M
- Pragmatic
- Forward thinking and progressive
- Agile
Weaknesses (Internal)
- Overly committed to the goal of Openness.
- Communication of our mission is hard to keep focused and clear
- Scope: we don’t say no to many projects
- Not yet into the U-M institutional infrastructure (eg. library transition would address this)
- Intangible benefits of Open (how do we measure our impact?)
- Idealistic
- Scope creep
Opportunities (External)
- More people interested in giving us content than we can process right now
- Monetization of resources (eg. partnering more closely with Distance Ed) and cost recovery
- New abilities/new personnel through partnerships/homes (e.g. MPublishing)
- Defining the role of a Public University(do more with state, community colleges and other academic partners)
- Alumni
- Emeritus faculty
- Drupal (opportunity for future software collaborations)
- Copyright infringement lawsuit
- Education climate (e-learning, scholarship, publishing, etc.) in general
Threats/Challenges (External)
- People who don’t understand our mission and benefits to them,
- In Med School: not actively advocating against us
- Open access advocate for one aspect of Open but not for other aspects of Open
- People who think that monetizing their materials is to the exclusion of openly licensing their content
- Overuse of Source Unknown/PD-Inel
- Copyright infringement lawsuit
- Understanding the lifecycle of the materials we create and house
- Use of published materials (internal and external)
[edit] Open.Michigan Staff Roles
- Focus on maintaining boundaries of discrete job responsibilities and roles.
- Past emphasis has capitalized on staff interests and skills
- Specific positions: currently our African Health Network OER project manager maintains a pulse on all international projects until further development; new Open Education Coordinator works closely with the Publications Manager and takes on point responsibility but other staff are encouraged to attend meetings and provide input.
- Continue to hand off copyright questions to the Copyright Office.
- Known Issues
- dScribe staffing in Fall 2010
- Maintain clear line of internal communication and roles
[edit] Follow Up from Session One
- Over the next month do a self-assessment of things that you feel are not worthwhile.
- Everyone develop "activity pie" of how much % time we spend on various activities.
- Complete "Doing" section and move to "To Do"
- Act on SWOT analysis
