Russian philosopher Mikhail Bakhtin stressed the relevance of heteroglossia and carnivalesque aspects of memes in his philosophy. Bakhtin stresses how the interpretation of memes is based off "languages within languages, and he claims that one must choose a language to fit in a situation" (Bakhtin 35). Mikhail also notes the relation of the carnival and the meme, saying how the "carnival, in the literary sense, is described as bringing groups of people together who normally do not associate, and it welcomes behaviors that are usually unacceptable (Rabelais 45-46).
