Pahoa, Hawaii (The Big Island), Hawaii

Built: 1934

Automated: 1972

This 125 foot tall square pyramidal skeleton tower is made of steel and sits on a reinforced concrete foundation. It has a focal plane of 156 feet. It is located on the easternmost point of the Big Island of Hawaii. In 1960 lava flowed to within feet of the tower, having already demolished the town of Kapoho and the keeper's dwellings at the station. Remarkably the lava divided into two streams that flowed past each side of the structure, leaving the tower unscathed.
