[edit] Getting Started

In order to start doing content capture from the materials you'll need to have some sort of screen capture tool installed on your computer. You will also need to convert your presentation slides into images to upload into the OERca. Read through the next two sections to get started.

[edit] Context Images

[edit] Converting PowerPoint or Keynote slides to JPEG images

If the course or sequence material is not a PowerPoint or Keynote presentation, you will have to add any context images manually with the Snapper Tool--skip this section and move to "Capturing Content Objects." For PowerPoint or Keynote materials, open the presentation in its native application.

For PowerPoint: Go to File>Save As - then select to save the slides as JPEG images. Do not alter the title. Choose the best quality possible. This will automatically create a folder (with the name of the presentation) with an image of every slide in the presentation. (Saves in format Slide1.jpg, Slide2.jpg, Slide3.jpg...)
For Keynote '08: Go to File>Export - then select to export the slides as JPEG images. Choose the best quality possible. Do not alter the title. Create a new folder for the images and export them. (Saves in format presentationName.001.jpg, presentationName.002.jpg, presentationName.003.jpg...)
For Keynote '09: Go to Share>Export - then select to export the slides as JPEG images. Choose the best quality possible. Do not alter the title. Create a new folder for the images and export them. (Saves in format presentationName.001.jpg, presentationName.002.jpg, presentationName.003.jpg...)

Each presentation will have its own folder of slide images that we will now refer to as context images. Now that you have created that folder, you can compress (or zip) it into a .zip file and upload it to OERca.

  1. For Mac PC: right click on the folder and select "Compress" or "Archive" - the compressed file will sit next to the original folder (filename.zip). For Windows PC: right click on the folder and select "Send to" - then select "Compressed (zipped) folder".
  2. Open OERca in your browser.
  3. Choose the course or sequence you want to use.
  4. Choose the MATERIAL to which the images belong.
  5. On the top navigation of the page, select "Add Content Objects."
  6. Find the "Bulk Upload" and select "Browse..."
  7. Locate the .zip file of context images for that specific material (presentation) on your computer and select it.
  8. Click "Add" in the OERca and you should see a message indicating that content objects have been added (while the context images are not the content objects themselves, they will provide a context view for the content objects that you capture).

[edit] Capturing Context Images for other file formats

The process is the same as the Capturing Content Objects (COs) section below, except when saving it to OERca through the Snapper you select "Context Image" (step 5) and then choose the appropriate page number (step 6).

[edit] Playing with Content

[edit] Capturing Content Objects (COs)

Before you start capturing content objects:

  1. Open OERca in your browser.
  2. Choose the course or sequence you want to use.
  3. Choose the material with which you will be working.
  4. If you have not added any content objects for this material, click the button: "Use Snapper tool to capture Content Objects." If you have already added content objects to this material you can find the Snapper Tool by going to the top navigation of the page and selecting "Add Content Objects." You will see the Snapper Tool on the left.
  5. Also, for Windows users, open the Screen Hunter (XP) or Snipping Tool (Vista) screen capture application. Mac users do not need to open anything.

Okay, now you can start capturing content objects:

  1. Open the material in its native application (PowerPoint, Keynote, PDF, Word, etc).
  2. Start going through the material looking for possible policy issues (Endorsement, Copyright, Privacy). See the Casebook for more details on what to look for and what constitutes as a content object.
  3. When you find a content object you would like to capture, you have two options.
1) Capture: Use the screen capture application. Use this if the content object cannot be copied to the clipboard directly. This option is analogous to taking a photograph of the object. Mac users should press the keys (together): Apple (Command), Control, Shift, 4 [Command + Control + Shift + 4] // Windows users should press the key: F6 (Screen Hunter allows you to set a hotkey).
NOTE - After hitting [Command + Control + Shift + 4] or [F6] you will see crosshairs. Click and drag to create a box around the area you would like to capture. When you release the mouse button the content object will be saved.
2) Copy: if the content object is a selectable object within a document, presentation, pdf etc., you may be able to copy the content object by right clicking and choosing "Copy" [Windows users: Control + C][Mac users: Command + C]
NOTE - Some users have been getting errors with the Snapper when copying content objects to the clipboard using method #2. If you have trouble with this, alert the dScribe 2s and use method #1.
4. Go back to the Snapper Tool at the OERca website.
5. If this is a content object, choose "Original Object." If this is a context image, choose that option.
6. Type the page or slide number on which the content object appears in the material.
7. To finish, click "Save".

Capture as many objects as you would like following this procedure. Each content object you upload to the OERca will also need other information added to it in order to clear the object for publishing. Read the next section on Attaching Metadata to learn more about adding information to content objects.

[edit] Attaching Metadata to COs

After adding a content object to the OERca you need to add any citation or copyright information available for that object. Then, based on that information and the workflow questions, you will need to recommend an action for that content object or send a question to the dScribe 2 or instructor for assistance. An explanation of the fields and what they mean can be found at Metadata instructions.
