OERca Scenarios: Analysis

These are actions we have identified from the scenarios where the actors are doing the right thing, but in the wrong way:


  • Getting feedback from instructors on missing citations and replacements by meeting weekly with them instead of using the built-in tool functionality. One goal is to reduce the burden on instructors when publishing OER materials, thus, although meeting weekly is a good idea, the system's functionality will ensure minimum burden on the instructor. Of course, if the instructor is willing and unburdened, face to face is always better.
  • Similar to the above, only this time with respect to final reviews -- there should be no real need to physically meet the instructor for the reasons stated above.
  • We find that actors are often trying to organize materials on their own system and then share materials through email. The goal is to share and access these material in an efficient manner, but it requires a good deal of searching and personal memory access. Given email constraints, it also requires multiple uploads and downloads. [Faculty Workshops - McPhearson #4]
  • When course/content management systems are already in use, sharing content should be a simple granting of access to the content. However, not all CMSs communicate with one another and finding content within someone else's CMS could be problematic. [Faculty Workshops - McPhearson #4]
  • Holding discussions and/or meetings around content without capturing the conversations there reduces the usefulness of the discussion. Actors were trying to remember comments from a different time and place and had to rely on faulty memory to achieve the goal of collaborating. [Faculty Workshops - McPhearson #6]
  • Actors wanted to find open content and insert that into their materials. However, they lacked the understanding of copyright law and the licensing language. [Faculty Workshops - McPhearson #6]
  • Actors are required to attach license information to content inserted into materials. Formatting this information, obtaining the correct information, and understanding the license information all play a role here. (XMP, RDFa) [Faculty Workshops - McPhearson #6]
  • When discussing particular pieces of content, the actors had difficulty locating content within materials, and keeping those comments associated with the proper content. [Faculty Workshops - McPhearson #8]
  • Uploading and downloading materials and content causes time delays. Once content is on a site, it would be easier if it could be manipulated at the site rather than locally. This might only apply to a small subset of content/materials. [Faculty Workshops - Moikeena #5]
  • Finding the most appropriate or best content requires a hunt and seek approach. What are the options for flipping that around--To the community: "I'm looking for X. Who can help me find it?" [Faculty Workshops - McPhearson #8]
