Health Subject Headings

If you are looking for health sciences subheadings or taxonomy, we looked at several for categorizing the health OER for the African Health OER Network. Here are some of the sites we found in the search. Thanks to the U-M Global Health Librarian for her help with this aspect of the project. We developed a list of headings and subheadings by which to organize OER for the Health OER Network (DOC)

Contents

[edit] Unified Medical Language System (UMLS)

(requires free license)

Description: Very comprehensive taxonomy which includes multiple sub-taxonomies. It covers health science disciplines, concepts, and practice. It is very granular - too much so for the purposes of the African Health OER Network.

View taxonomy: You can view the tree by going to http://umlsks.nlm.nih.gov/uPortal/Login > Login > Tree Browser

Implementations: TUSK (http://tusk.tufts.edu/), Medical iSeek (http://medical.iseek.com/)

[edit] Medical Subject Headings (MeSH)

Description: Comprehensive taxonomy covering multiple disciplines within health sciences. For the African OER Network, we chose the Health Occupations heading as the top for tree and made some minor modifications to orderings. It fit our purposes well, aside from gaps in pharmacy and public health.

View Taxonomy: There are two options: The MeSH Database (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/mesh/) and the MeSH browser (http://www.nlm.nih.gov/mesh/MBrowser.html)

[edit] MedEd PORTAL

Description: Website for medical and dental education materials, most of which are available as OER. The disciplines and hot topics for browsing apply only for dentistry and medicine, not other health sciences.

View Taxonomy: http://services.aamc.org/30/mededportal/servlet/segment/mededportal/find_resources/browse/

[edit] MLibrary Health Sciences High-Level Browse

Description: Hand-selected custom top-level subcategories for health sciences. This list was compiled by U-M libraries to categories the health databases to which the university subscribes.

View Taxonomy: Go to http://lib.umich.edu. In the header, click Search Tools. In the header, click Find Databases. Select the by Subject tab. Under subject, select Health Sciences. The subcategories are displayed in the box on the right.

[edit] Embase/Emtree

(requires institutional subscription)

Description: This was useful for filling in gaps in categories in the MeSH tree and as a thesaurus.

View Taxonomy: http://searchtools.lib.umich.edu/V?func=native-link&resource=UMI02345 > http://embase.com/emtree. Use the Find Term tab to access the thesaurus. Use the Browse by Facet tab to navigate the whole taxonomy

[edit] Global Health Database

(requires institutional subscription)

Description: This was useful for filling in gaps in categories in the MeSH tree and as a thesaurus.

View Taxonomy: http://searchtools.lib.umich.edu/V?func=native-link&resource=UMI03641. In the header, mouseover Subjects and then select CAB subject thesaurus. Enter the search term, select the Relevancy Ranked radio button and then click browse.
