How to license your documents

The first step is to make sure you know which license you are going to apply to this work. Information about the various licenses available for these types of works can be found on the Open Content License page.

Now that you've chosen your license, you need to display the license in your document so that it will be shared according to the terms you specified.

Let's say U-M faculty member Lisa Wooten selects the Creative Commons Attribution ShareAlike License (BY-SA) and wants to add the license to her document. She simply adds the extra information at the beginning of the document (for instance, on the title page). The recommended information is: Author's name, license name, and the URL of the license. For example see this title page for a paper by Lisa Wooten who has chosen the Creative Commons Attribution ShareAlike license (click for higher resolution):
