Welcome to the website of the 2011 Computers and Writing conference, hosted by the Sweetland Center for Writing at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor.

Visit our Facebook page

The conference will take place from May 19-22, with pre-conference workshops on the 19th, as well as our kick-off reception in the beautiful Apse of the University of Michigan Museum of Art.

NOTE ABOUT SEATING ARRANGMENTS FOR LUNCHES & BANQUET AT THE MICHIGAN UNION: Due to the delightful fact that we have over 525 registered attendees (and counting!), we had to make some adjustments to or seating arrangements. (If you've been over to the ballroom yet, you'll see that it won't accomodate quite so many people.) SO, check the back of your name badge, which will indicate where you will be seated for which meal.

  • If you have a BLUE dot, you will sit in the Anderson Room for lunch on Friday.
  • If you have a GREEN dot, you will sit in the Anderson Room for Friday's banquet.
  • If you have a RED dot, you will sit in the Anderson Room for Saturday's lunch.
  • If you have NO dot, you will always be seated in the Ballroom.

We have made arrangments for simulcasting and communication between the rooms, so when you are seated in the Anderson Room, you will still be able to fully view, hear, and participate in the presentations and question-answer sessions.

We appreciate your flexibility as we (quite happily!) make room for all of us.

View the CONFERENCE PROGRAM on the Program page. You'll also find a brief conference schedule and links to campus maps.  Then check out some of Sweetland's favorite A2 spots to eat, drink, and hang out.

Head on over to our ArtPick website, customize your name badge, and get in on early conversations about our conference theme!

Please note: The advance registration period ended MAY 12. Registration is now available on-site only. Visit our Registration page for hours. (We are unable to provide on-site registrants with a free wireless access code upon check-in, as it takes at least 24 hours for the university to generate a code.)

GRN

Graduate students, check out the  Graduate Research Network (GRN):

The GRN consists of roundtable discussions, grouping those with similar interests with discussion leaders who facilitate conversations and offer suggestions for developing your projects and determining suitable venues for publication. We welcome those pursuing work at any stage, from those just beginning to consider ideas to those whose projects are ready to pursue publication.

Graduate students may consider applying to the annual Graduate Research Network (GRN), which is a free workshop that can supplement activities at the conference, or be attended independently. The GRN 2011 Call for Proposals can be found at: http://class.georgiasouthern.edu/writling/GRN/2011.

The site also features a link to information about applying for Travel Grant Funding.

Ride2CW

All attendees: Donate or ride in the second annual Ride to Computers and Writing “pledge ride” to support the Computers and Writing Graduate Research Network Travel Awards.

→ On Wednesday, May 18, come greet our riders as they arrive at Mission Control (aka North Quad 2nd Floor Media Gateway)!  You can follow their progress on RideStream.

Many riders (and one of them could be you!), from several directions, will ride to Computers and Writing 2011- Writing in Motion: Traversing Public/Private Spaces at the University of Michigan. Bill Hart-Davidson has already tweeted that he will ride from MSU! Suzanne Blum Malley, Alanna Frost, and Cheryl Ball (and others - TBA) will ride from the Indiana/Michigan border.

There are several ways that you can help to send a starving grad student to C&W 2011:
  • Become a rider! Join other riders or start your own route. Convince your friends to ride, too. Let us know your plans at 2011@ride2cw.org and we’ll shout it out for our fund raising efforts.
  • Share this site with your friends and make a donation (see “The Fine Print” page for details);
  • Follow us on Twitter @ride2cw, retweet our announcements to your Twitterverse, and use #ride2cw when you talk about it;
  • Join our group on Facebook – Ride2CW -  and invite others to join and donate!
  • Use RideStream* to participate and follow our riders!
*RideStream is a web-based service and mobile application being developed for Ride2CW by Bill Hart-Davidson, Mike McLeod, and a fabulous team of undergraduate researchers/developers at MSU WIDE. RideStream allows riders, supporters, and others who may be interested to coordinate their participation in the event. Check out all they are doing for us at the RideStream Development Blog!
