The Computers in Writing-Intensive Classrooms (CIWIC) summer institute was offered for twenty years annually between 1985 and 2005. It was the predecessor to the Digital Media and Composition Institute (DMAC) at The Ohio State University.

The Computers in Writing-Intensive Classrooms institute was "designed for teachers of English who want to integrate computers into their writing-intensive classrooms." [1] The workshop focused on writing and technology, with the 2001 institute focusing on "the thoughtful integration of technology into the composition classroom, networks, hypertext, online course management tools, electronic conferencing, purchase of software and hardware, lab management, and use of the World Wide Web."[2]

Depending on the individual institute, workshop students could be past CIWIC students, teachers, administrators, support staff, and 7th-11th grade students, [3], as well as "two-and four-year teachers of English studies; elementary teachers of language arts; graduate students in programs related to composition, rhetoric, and technical communication studies; writing center and writing program administrators, etc."[4]

Instructors included Cynthia Selfe, Gail Hawisher, Anne Frances Wysocki, and Richard Selfe[5], as well as Johndan Johnson-Eilola [6].

The larger CIWIC program offered individual summer institute tracks such as Approaches to Integrating Computers (AIC), Integrating New Media (NM), Independent Projects (IP),[7] as well as Electronic Communication Across the Curriculum (CIWIC/ECAC [8].
