Survey Experience

Adding a back button

Allow respondents to move back in the survey and change responses.

  • The back button will work only within a block, not between separate blocks
  • The back button is useful to have on when you are testing skip and display logic

Save and continue

Allows respondent to stop survey and then come back at the same place.

  • When a personalized individual link is sent out, the link will remember where the respondent left off
  • When an anonymous link is used, a cookie is placed on the browser to remember the user. Multiple browsers opened on one computer will count as separate users.
  • This option is selected by default. However, there is no automatic written indication or notice for respondents that this is an option. Unless it is written in the instructions, they would never know about it

Show export tags

When turned on, the survey respondent sees the export ID tag (QID) of the question. This may be helpful when collaborating with users in developing the survey.

Survey Title

This text will appear in the browser as the window or tab title.

Survey Protection

Open access

Allow anyone with access to the generic link to take the survey.

By invitation only

The generic link is disabled and only personalized links sent out by the survey mailer will function.

Password protection

A password you specify must be entered for the respondent to take the survey.

Prevent ballot-box stuffing

Prevents the survey from being taken by the same user more than once. A cookie is placed on the browser to remember the user. This applies only to surveys accessed through the generic link. The survey mailer automatically allows only one use per individual link, unless “multiple completes per link” is specified.

  • Even with this feature on, sometimes some IPs will appear numerous times in the dataset. Some browsers such as AOL record the same IP for everyone according to RSB contacts at commercial panels.
  • When surveys are distributed using the panel, even if this feature is turned off, panelists will only be able to access the survey once. The receive the message that their “responses have been recorded”.

HTTP referer verification [sic]

This feature specifies a specific URL from which the survey must be accessed.

Survey expiration

You can customize how many days you would like your survey to be accessible. The respondent would not be able to take the survey starting at 12:01am on the survey expiration date.

Survey Termination

End-of-survey message options

Messages can be taken from the library. Any end-of-survey message declared here will act as the primary message. However, if different messages are required depending on how individuals answer portions of the survey, they can be specified in the survey flow by creating a branch and then adding the end of survey command with a customized end of survey message.

Options for redirecting

Take respondents to a different website or survey after they complete the first survey

NOTE: The redirect and end-of-survey messages cannot be used together. If you need a message and also the ability to send respondents to a different website, provide the link to that website in the end-of-survey message or place the desired end-of-survey message in the survey that you are redirecting to.

Inactive Survey

When a survey is deactivated, you can show respondents a custom message or select the default message.

Partial Completion

This section allows you to determine how long a survey can remain open before it is closed and data is recorded.

Response Set

group responses according to date or distribution method Response sets allow you to place survey responses into different buckets. For example, quarterly or monthly surveys could be collected in different buckets. This allows you to view results of the same survey for different collection periods. Only one response set can be used at one time

ADVANCED TIP

If you are conducting a survey in which the respondents’ identities shouldn’t be linked to their responses, but you need to know their names to track participation, the redirect option is a useful tool. At the conclusion of the confidential survey, simply redirect to a separate short survey asking for name verification. The names of all people who participated will be stored separately from the data maintaining confidentiality.
